Has anyone heard the name Melkian before. A female ancestor, Melkian Rutley married a Baldwin Jeffs in Cullompton, Devon in 1608. I googled it and came up with it as a surname, and as a district in Middle Earth (the lady was born long before Tolkien).
Any ideas or suggestions?

How many different records to you have of this person?
Is it possible it's related to Mellion? There is a parish in southeastern Cornwall, near the border with Devon, called St. Mellion. Though the original saint was male, perhaps the name sound feminine by 1608.
That's just a wild suggestion.
