I wondered if anyone would be interested in this article which I came across in the Scots Magazine from 1810 while researching a uni essay (not on names though - I get sidetracked easily ;) ). The author describes how middle/upper class parents in the UK were developing and refining a new set of naming conventions because all the old names had become too 'common'! I found it quite interesting. It's pretty tongue in cheek at some points e.g. 'Priscilla is rather dangerous, as it is apt to become Priss, which does not rhyme very prettily'! ;D, and Jenny was so common it got turned into a spinning wheel!

I've taken photographs of the 3 pages and put them on photobucket. It's obviously well over the 70 years for copyright to lapse but I'm still a bit unsure of posting it. If Mike or a mod does want me to remove the links I will.
