Sylbaris and Cyparis
Well, let's try again. I've been searching for almost one year now and still don't have the answer:
I would like to know what the names Sylbaris and also Cyparis mean. This question relates to the island of Martinique and the 1902 eruption that destroyed St. Pierre

latin cypărissŭs = CYPRESSUS - it is a name of CYPRESS tree (CUPRESSUS SEMPERVIRENS), family of this trees had the name CHAMAECYPARIS. In Greek mythology, CYPARISSUS, son of Telephus, was one of Apollo's homosexual lovers. Apollo gave the boy a tame deer as a companion but Cyparissus accidentally killed it with a javelin as it lay sleep in the undergrowth. Cyparissus asked Apollo to let his tears fall forever. Apollo turned the sad boy into a cypress tree, which was said to be a sad tree because the sap forms droplets like tears on the trunk.simmilar examples:
city CYPARISSIAS (KIPARISSIAS) - greek Κυπαρισσίας
surname Kypar'isşi-Apostolika - Kiparissi-Apostolika
List of Bishops of Sardica.- CYPARA (i.e. CYPARISSUS?) in AchaiaDariusz CYPARSKI
