Re: Not derived from Venice or Venetia
in reply to a message by Roxane
I gave some wrong information before my Grandmother always
maintained that she'd made up the name from the names Vanetta
and Alicia.
According to my name books Vanetta is the feminine form of Van
meaning "from" and Alicia has the same meaning as Alice.
I have discussed this again with my Mother and she is definately
not named for Venice, she always thought that she was the only
Vanecia until I told her about my Google.com search.
Just as I wasn't named for Roshanik or however it is spelt in
Persian, my Mum read the name in a novel and my Dad thought the
spelling of Roxanne was too fancy, so I ended up with one 'n'.
Therefore, what I'm trying to say is that a lot of what is
written on this messageboard is speculation and I thought that
some people would know what they were on about when dispensing information about names and their origins.

No one ever said your mother was named for Venice. Most people named Venetia or Venecia are probably not named for Venice, either. After all, I'm sure all those people naming their daughters Mackenzie are not naming them that with "son of Coinneach" in mind. They, just like your grandmother, liked the sound of the name without any thought of the meaning.
If you want a real meaning, the meaning of Venecia is the closest thing. Since your grandmother MADE UP the name, then the meaning of the name should technically be the combined meanings of Vanetta and Alicia, and asking about the meaning of the made up name Vanecia is pointless.
