Assuming that
Anaximander is a form of
Anaximandros, I wonder what the meaning is of the second part of the name ("mandros"). I already know that the first part of the name comes from
anax "master, lord, chief."
One would think that the second part is related to
andros "man", but then the names should have been
Anaxandros and
Anaxander.
An old post by
Pavlos in the board archives states that
mandros comes from
mandra "an enclosed space, usually by walls".
He didn't appear to be a 100% certain of this however, as he had said that he would have to look into it some more.
