I think that occasionally Mrs Claire's explanation would operate, but in the USA Shirelle is primarily from the name of the rock singing group the Shirelles, one of the first "all-girl" groups to become famous. Their name was derived from blending the first name of their lead singer, Shirley Owens, with an ending derived from the name of the Chantels, a previously popular rock singing group:http://www.history-of-rock.com/shirelles.htm

Interesting! Maybe outside of Jewish circles this would be the explanation.

And in South Africa people are known to spell it Cherelle as a version of Sheryl or Cheryl, but with the stress on the second syllable. There's a particularly engaging antiheroine, woman-you-love-to-hate type in a primetime local soapie called Cherelle: very good actress for the genre, beautiful older woman, goes round marrying for money and power, and murdering all obstacles in her path! Unlikely on the face of it to inspire a naming trend, but you never know.

Shirel (sheer-el) is a modern Hebrew name, from Shir and "El", G-d. It is female by the way, and sometimes "feminized" as Shirelle, like Rachel -> Rachelle.
