Given that there are possibly about 5000 languages in the world, and the number of clearly distinct (i.e. distinct enough to be clearly not a mispronounciations by foreigners) short words maybe in the high hundreds, it is usually foolhardy to hazard a guess as to meaning without knowing which language family one is looking into. It would help a lot if you specify the ethnicity (or other determinatives) of where you think the name came from.

Having said that, there is a word sher in Farsi which means a tiger, with associated connotations of power and courage. It is the common word for tiger in many languages of north-northwest India, and a feminine Sherni. The Sikh religion and culture, in particular, has a fondness for such epithets.
