German roots:
Hampus is the latinized version of the Frisian and Low
German names Hampe / Hampo / Hampke etc., which are short forms of the Old High
German name Hamprecht.
Hamprecht is a newer form of both:
Heimbert (meaning: home + shining)
and:
Hagenbert (meaning: hedge, protection + shining)
