My mother bears this name, and she has challenged med with seemingly easy task of finding the origin of this Danish name, yet until now i am unsuccessful in doing so.

Any clues ?

Hi Klaus,

Ylva is right, Bitten is a Danish pet form of Birgitte. It also reminds of the Danish vocabulary word bitte = 'bit'; Danish: lille bitte = 'tiny'.

I think it is a nn for Birgitte

Birgitte is the Danish form of Bridget. Gitte, Bitte and Bitten are nn for Birgitte.
