Bethan etc
Hi there. I'm familiar with Bethan as a Welsh diminutive of Elizabeth, but on the BBC Wales website there is a journalist called Betsan Powys. Does anyone know if this is a recognised Welsh name (or nickname), or a Welsh version of Betsy, or something else? And, indeed, if the -an ending turns up in any other names?

Meic Stephens in "Welsh Names for your Children: A Complete Guide" Lists Bet, Beti, Bethan, Betsan, Betsi and Bessi all as diminutive forms of Elisabeth.
I believe I read once in "Welsh Surnames" by T.J Morgan and Prys Morgan that the deminutive -an was a common Welsh ending for 'standard' nicknames such as Meg - Megan.

So it is a variant! Thank you so much - I rather thought it had to be, but you never know.
