Well, what you were told is correct. Edd is just a spelling variation of
Ed, and
Ed is most often a pet form of
Edward, though it can be from
Edgar,
Edmund,
Edwin, or any other name starting with
Ed. And the "
Ed-" syllable in all of those names goes back to an Old English word that meant "prosperity" or "rich".
