I'm back!!! with a question!!!
All right, first and foremost, hi everyone!!!
I wonder who all remembers me
I remember Nanaea, Pavlos, Yahalome, Davidh, and Mike C of course
then there was a Merry something... person... who made me laugh a lot... oh well
I am writing a manga (plot of a Japanese comic book series so Nan may be a great help) that is based in Russia. Same genre as Sailor Moon.
I will have continuing questions as it develops more, I have already been working on it for almost a year, and lately it's really starting to come together.
1) At this point I was wanting to know the meaning of the word/name Horosha. Some sources say it means beautiful, some say 'good-looking' all say its an adj that can only be applied to females. If it does mean good looking is it in a beautiful way, or does it mean more attractive.
2) I am looking for a Russian last name that means wisdom, or something relativly close to that. I was told a Russian last name can be created by just adding ov/ova, y/aya/ya or ich to any adj.
3) According to this database, the god Chenobog is a god of darkness, the underworld and grief. But sometimes I see him listed as a god of death as well. I know his name means 'dark god', or 'black god' and Morana is a goddess of death, but i was wondering if Chenobog is just sometimes seen as a god of death bcz of his association with the underworld, or Morana is just 'seen' as a goddess of death because of her association with winter, or one of them really supposed to be head honcho. I do know Morana means death. If the case is Morana is head death deity I will need to do a lot of switching around (-cries- and ill lose the ability to use the demon Polunocnica who is really cool!) and I will need a new god o' the wind, bcz Stribog will have to take over ice element from Morana, who I know have it under. Now, I have a demi or lower god of sorts, Dogoda, who is the 'gentle west wind' who is appearently related to the Persian diety Ada. Anyone got info on this Ada dude, cz i can't find nuthing...
Well thats enough to plague ur minds over for now.
Much love guys, i missed y'all!!!

Yea.... remember when i used to cause trouble ^_^
Yeah, but I'll tell ya a secret...
I really LIKE troublemakers! :) It's true!
But it's the interesting ones I like, with depth to them. And you were always in that category, kiddo, even if I gave you a hard time in the beginning. You were still intriguing and original, you know. :)
The dime-a-dozen, unimaginative troublemakers with their heads jammed up their heinies, tho', they're just grist for our mills. Bwa-ha-ha-ha! ;)

awwww nan
awwww i think i may get all teary, lol
actually, believe it or not u got me very much interest in religions,
which is one of my major past times now
and gave me a real appreciation for very misunderstood religions
I never found the Christian religion worked for me,but i was partly brought up by the church, so i just went. I tried the whole blindly believeing, but it just didn't work for me, I didn't believe or feel the things that we were supposed to believe or feel.
In the end it's all been good seeing as I have to very pagan friends, and i understand them much more after they told me they were and told me about their faith, and I have found a faith that works for me. I can't tell my grandparents... my mom thinks im insane (ironic as she is the one off her rocker) and ... well my dad is cool with it. My grandfather is a pastor of sorts and think everything is evil -rolls eyes-. I get in trouble because I start debates with him about loop holes in the Christian religion. Mom says im stressing his bad heart.
Oh well, took some time to find my niche in here, i tend to make a scene on new sites then snuggle on in... not sure why... ah well ^_^
Oh nan, actually can u do me a favor somewhere... or someone told me there are like 9 basic principles to being a satanist... not quiet principles
one was like 'if someone strikes against u once, turn the other cheek, it they do it again, defend urself'... or depending on whose telling u 'kill them' lol in a joking non-relastic sense, no worries
u wouldnt happen to have those would ya, or know of a site
or am i dreaming?
u can email me the info or post, whichever u wanna

Silver, you must be thinking of the following, from *The Book of Satan* by Anton LaVey:
"Hate your enemies with a whole heart, and if a man smite you on one cheek, SMASH him on the other..." III:7
Modern Satanists don't condone murder, because to do so in a civilized society is stupid -- and stupidity is the Number 1 "sin" in Satanism. If one is not prepared to face the consequences of one's actions, then one is not a Satanist. However, responsible retribution is not only condoned, but expected. Because the person who smites you first, had damn well better be prepared to face the consequences of such an action. Satanists do not "turn the other cheek."

lol!!
Thats me in a nut shell, ie. dont mess with me
ill listen to ur point of view, but dont preach
and i know all about the differences between fictional gothic satanism, teenage 'dabblers' and the real religion
i think u gave me the site www.religioustolerance.org
which i adore, and recommend to anyone
i dont know quiet what i remember, its so hard with so many people out their claiming to be a satanist, and not having the faintest clue to the true ideals of the religion
so many people have given it a bad name
as for stupid... i think humans are inherently stupid, so there would be a lot of sinning going around, lol
oh well, i thinks thats all i got to say ^_^

Hi Silver
The most common meaning of horosho (õîðîøo) is "good/well" in the most boring sense - as in "he is a good boy" or "that's a good idea". Horosho can also mean "good-looking," but again, it's more of "attractive to some extent" than "extremely beautiful". If you want an adjective that means "beautiful" (for a girl) you can try Krasivaya (êðàñèâàÿ) or Prekrasnaya (ïðåêðàñíàÿ). Also, Krasotka (êðàñîòêà) is the Russian word for "a beauty". Btw, the female of horosho is horoshaya, but I guess horosha will be fine too.
On Russian last names, you can form them by adding ov/ova, etc. to a regular name, or you can use an adjective on its own. You can go with Mudriy (for a boy)/Mudraya (for a girl) (mudriy/mudraya mean "wise"). Or you can imagine that your character is a descendant of a man named Solon :) and give them the last name of Solonov/Solonova.
Finally, Morena (I am pretty sure it's Morena, not Morana) does mean "death," but she is simply the personification of death. Chernobog is the one who rules the underworld.
I hope that clears things up a little :P. Greetings

I'm not getting the whole 'personifcation' of death thing. I know what to personify means, I just don't get how one is to personify death, and the difference between that aspect of Morana to Chenobog.
Has anyone seen a good Slavic creation story. All sources say that Lada, Goddess of Love, bore all the gods, yet as well it is said that Rod came out of 'the egg' first. I need to know which was first.
I need a last name meaning 'happiness' for a male character. (His god is Bialobog (Byelobog on this site), god of light and happiness).
If anyone has info on any of the following gods, (solid info, not ur personal ideas please, as much as i value them this is some serious work):
Kupala
Lada
Lel
Morana
Rugievit/Ruevit (sometimes the same god)
Thanks!!

Marena and Chernobog
OK - when I think of death, I think how somebody's heart stops beating. When the Slavs thought of death, they imagined Morana/Marena coming and causing a person to stop living. Generally, Morana's job was to take human lives - something like the Western Death that goes around with a scythe. Chernobog was the god of death, darkness, evil, etc., he ruled the underworld and what not, but Morena did the dirty job of "physically" taking lives. In a sentence, Chernobog was the one who would wish for somebody to die and send the death, Morana would be the death that... hmmm... caused people to die.
On the creation story, Rod is the one that came out of the primordial egg, then he created the Earth, the Sky, the Underworld and Lada (a.k.a. Rodenica). Lada gave birth to the rest of the gods. Belobog was the one who along with his shadow (Chernobog) created the living things.
I am going to check my books on Slavic mythology tonight, and give you details on the gods you want. In the meantime, this website
http://www.geocities.com/cas111jd/slavs/index.htm contains a detailed (although not extremely reliable) info that might get you started.

O lordy... or should i say Boggy...
Slavic mythology is messed
perhaps earlier familiarization with Greek, Roman and Egyptian Mythology, or better study on the subjects has lead to them being more clear and concise... but this is just insane.
They have several gods of one thing, eg. the sun, and sometimes mulitple names of one god, which in some texts is seen as the same god, and in other texts as a seperate god, and one god will rule over 5 things where another god will rule over 4 of those 5 things.
Like, roman and greek,
there is a god of love, and sun and moon and etc etc
none of this mumbo jumbo
but then perhaps someone coming into mythology with no prior knowledge would be confused with the true gods vs. demi gods, and the gods predessors, the titans, and titanesses
uhhhhh
soooo lost... so much work... just when i thought i was starting to understand this... well frankly bs...
aggg -falls over-

LOL! Just keep in mind that
there are 13 Slavic nations, and each of them inevitably has its own variation of the names of the gods, its own local gods, spirits and the like. At least they don't communicate (or mate :) with mortals to create the ancient Greek pandemonium of demi gods and heroes

ill give em that much
the whole impregnating girls as a shower of gold thing (zeus) is just plane disturbing... and the girl in the cow.. and the bull.... -shivers-
they should not teach that in school!
Now, a good way to solve some issues, is there a way i can isolate a particular region of russia, say the region around St. Petersburg/Leningrad (same city). That's about Lativia right? Or... is there a nation in russia that has a more set mythology or religous structure, i mean like does anyone have an accurate website/source that deals with the mythology of just one of these nations
Perhaps certral russia would be best, less influence from the Balkans, Persians, and Norse religions, or u wouldnt believe how much the greeks got in there too.
Newho yea

Here goes
Kupala/Kupalo - the deity of summer and plants (especially herbs). Some Slavic tribes view Kupala as a goddess, sister of Morana, and some - as a god (under the name of Kupalo), brother and husband of Morana. Anyways, according to the myth, every spring the god Jarilo/Yarilo comes to the human world to bring new life and abundant crops. He grows older as the day grows longer and on the day of the summer solstice (June 22nd), when the day is the longest, he turns into Kupalo - the god of summer. So, Kupalo is the adult Jarilo. The eve of June 22 is called Kupalo's eve. It is believed that that's a magic time - the trees have the power to speak and move and herbs and other medical plants collected that night have super healing powers. Kupalo stays around until around late September when he goes back to the svarga (the gods' world) and Marena takes over.
Lel - a minor god of love, son of Lada and twin brother of Lela. According to the myth, he is a young man dressed in white, with a flower wreath on his head. He is a companion of his mother Lada and the patron-god of marriage and family.
Morana/Morena - originally the goddess of winter and by default - the goddess of hunger, cold and death. Her name is derived from the Slavic "mor" - death. She is the sister of Kupalo, but, whereas he brings life, she brings death. She lives in the underworld with the souls of the dead (a.k.a. "mori") and ascends to the human world in the winter. According to the Slavs, that's why winters are cold, the grain and meat are scarce and death prevails. In the "divine hierarchy" she is under the ultimate master of darkness, Chernobog, but nevertheless, she possesses some wicked powers herself (buahahahaha!).
Ruevit - the god of the light and heat, protector of fertility and crops. To the Western Slavs he is known as Rugievit, as they believe he lives on Rugen (an island in the Blatic sea). Ruevit has seven heads, seven swords in his belt and one sword in his hands. Each of the seven heads and seven swords watch over and respectively protect the crops in each of the seven fertile months of the year. The Southern Slavs who used to grow vines and make wine, also consider him the parton god of wine-making.

Good luck on your driving test
I've been meaning to go take mine for a little over two months now, but I can't find the time to sit in line at the DMV. And since my Bulgarian licence is perfectly valid in California... aaagh, one day I'll be sorry for all that procrastination, but as my Irish friend says, "I cannot be bothered right now."

Ooops! It's the Baltic sea :(
One more thing - Nikeisha
Ok, so i found this wicked name Nikeisha, a Slavicanization of the Greek Goddess, Nike, Goddess of Victory. Now, I have never been able to find any reference to this name actually existing, and I am starting to wonder if someone made it up. How viable is it as a Russian name, or a Russianiation of Nike. I am aware that Nikita has the same meaning as Nikeisha... but i just feel in love with the latter.
Ty,
