Eric & Thor
ERIC m English, French
Pronounced: ER-ik (English), er-EEK (French)
Derived from the Old Norse elements ei "ever" and rikr "ruler". A famous bearer was Eric the Red, a 10th-century navigator and explorer who discovered Greenland. This was also the name of kings of Denmark, Sweden and Norway.Sorry to be picky but Erick the Red was called Eirik
** he wasn't english **If you look at Norwegian names you find this :
EIRIK m Norwegian
Norwegian form of ERIC
** Eirik is NOT a form of ERIC it is opposite (norwegian is the orign of the name) **Then it is Thor
THOR m Norse Mythology
Pronounced: THOR
From the Old Norse name Þórr, meaning "thunder". Thor was the Norse god of strength..etc
** Incorrect. TOR was his name, from that we get the word torden (thunder) **
(everything between ** are my comments)

This website is written in English, so pretty much everyone who visits here speaks English as at least a second language. I've made English forms the main entries simply to reduce the amount of clicking required before arriving at a meaningful definition. Usually I try to make a note of the original spelling at the main entry, though I've missed doing this for Eric (Eirikr).

Hej Arnt,Tor / Thor / Tore / Tord are modern versions of the old god-name "Þórr" (´thunder´) as it was written in Old Icelandic and Old Norwegian.The Þ-sound just remains in Icelandic, not in Danish, Swedish and Norwegian, so there the spelling is mostly Tor (and Thor). The modern Icelandic spelling of the name is Þór/Þórar/Þórir.--------Eiríkur = Icelandic
Eirik = Norwegian
Erik = Danish, Swedish, Low German etc.
Eric = English, French etc.
Erich = GermanThey all derive from the Old Icelandic name "Eiríkr" (on rune-stones the spelling "airikr" was found). It is uncertain if the name derives from Old Norse "Aina-rikiaR" (´lonely´ + ´rich, mighty´) or "Aiwa-rikiaR" (´ever, always´ + ´rich, mighty´).Some more forms of Eiríkr:Erk

Eric's name was Eiríkr, actually. Eirik is a modernisation.
