Perhaps the "Elyria" you've heard is a variation of "Illyria"?
According to the dictionary, Illryia was "an ancient region of the Balkan Peninsula on the Adriatic coast".
Shakespeare obviously liked the melodiousness of the name, and used it for the name of the kingdom which is the setting in his play titled *Twelfth Night*.
