Lenois, male name, any idea of it's origin?
It, and it's various spellings, are somewhat common where I live (West Tennessee). It is my grandfather's name. It was used mainly in the 1800s to mid 1900s. Other spellings I have encountered are Lanoice, Lenoys, and Lanois. Thanks,Melina Raven Maness

Hey, Faerie :)Lenois/Lanois is probably the French surname Lanois. The other spellings would represent an English attempt to pronounce the French name :)

Hey Meredith! I had a hunch it was French (the Le/La part) but I kept thinking it might be connected to Noir, and meaning something like The Black. What does Lanois mean? Any idea?

Not a clue...Try Noms de Famille et prenoms etc (or something like that) by Albert Dauzat...It covers most French surnames and possibly a couple of first names as well. I ought to get a copy but I'm too lazy. I suppose I should check Amazon for it....
If I get the afternoon in the Welsh National Library that I've been after, I'll look it up for you :)
