??
I recently saw the broadway play "Les Miserables" and one of the character's names was Eponine. I was wondering if anyone knew what this name meant. I know it is French but other than that I have no clue. If you can help, I would very much appreciate it.
Thank You in advance.

Eponine
The meaning of the name Eponine is unknown, and the name itself may have been invented by Victor Hugo to show the character of Eponine's family, the Thenardiers. Eponine's mother was characterized as the type of woman who most likely would have given her baby a name taken from cheap novels (and also most likely would have misread the name in the novel and therefore gotten the spelling wrong). In other words, Madame Thenardier (Eponine's mother) would have been the 19th century equivalent of the chicks who give their babies kree-8-tive names today.
Regardless, Eponine at least sounds pretty.

I forgot...the name Eponine is a female's name. Thanks
It sounds to me to be a form of Epona, a celtic horse goddess... click here for more info on Epona: http://www.marthascottage.com/epona.htm
but I could be wrong... they just sound very similar...
