OK, here's the scoop.
Cindy is indeed short for Cynthia (Kynthia in Greek). Kynthia means "woman from Kynthos", a mountain on the island of Delos (birthplace of the goddess Artemis and the god Apollo).
Kynthia was used as an epithet of Artemis (Diana) and Kynthios ("man from Kynthos") was used for Apollo.
So Kynthia, Artemis, Artemisia and Apollonia are all valid Greek Cindy counterparts!
To come to Ivayla's point: 'though Kynthia *is* a Greek name, it is quite rarely used nowadays in Greece. Artemis however is quite popular. Artemisia and Apollonia somewhat less frequently encountered :)
