Protestant King Billy defeated his father-in-law, convert-to-Catholicism James II, at the Battle of the Boyne in July, 1690.
Having both Catholics and Protestants on my Irish mother's side, I prefer to say nothing more than that this was surely a pivotal moment in history that the Irish people, in retrospect, could well have done without.
