I would like to know (please and thank you) more about the names
Verthande, Urda and Skuld
These are female names of norse goddeses who were similar to the greek fates
Skuld is future, Urda is past and Verthande is present i believe
they took care of the tre of life named Yggdrasil, whose branchs spread all out over the earth, into the sky, and into the ground (the underworld)
I am interested in these names bcz in a Japanese Anime series called Ah, My Goddess or Oh, My Goddess (i see it different all the time)
the names of the three goddesses are from the names of the norse gods.
Urda becomes Urd, and Verthande became Belldandy because ther is no 'v' or 'th' sound in Japanese

Verdandi, Werdandi, Verdande (Old Norse. meaning: necessety. Verdandi is one of the norns (= Fatal Sisters). She is responsible for the presence. She spins the life threads of the people. She lives together with the other norns at the Urdawell. The norns only talk to each other and to the god Odin)
Skuld (Old Norse. meaning: future. Skuld is one of the norns and at the same time the highest of the Valkyries. She is responsible for the future and spins the future life threads of the people)

"Belldandy" frightens me so much (the name, haven't seen the anime). Are you sure it's Japanesized and not just Anglicized or something? Japanese doesn't have an 'l' either, nor a vowel 'y,' nor a two-consonant combination unless the first one is 'n'.... I'm kind of curious how such a bizarre name (IMHO) came about. ^_^

I'm not really sure why it scares me, it's sort of a gut reaction to the name. In fact, the first time I saw it I think I thought something along the lines of "Oh my gods, that's ugly." (No offense to fans of the name--I just thought it was ironic. ^_^) Maybe it's too cutesy for me.

Belldandy is absolutely adorable and you know it, Lilith. ^_- Anyway, I've seen really really pure purist fans of Oh My Goddess! also write it as Berudandi. Verethanti/Verdandi (I've seen both in Norse mythology, actually) to Berudandi isn't so complicated, and because l and r sound alike and a y is easy to tack on a name, Belldandy was born! At least, I'm pretty sure it went that way. Something like that...

So . . . it's like an Anglicization of a Japanization of a Norse name? Psychedelic. Verdandi to Berudandi would make sense, although I have seen "v" in Japanese, as a "u" with the little two-mark thingy over it . . . I don't think it's very standard, though.
