The guys all wear "head things" (they're called "turbans") probably because they're followers of the Sikh religion. It has a lot of personal names with the "-deep" (lamp) ending.
If you ask nicely, some of the guys might admit that they wear little ceremonial daggers in scabbards strapped across their chests as well -- another Sikh thing that some schools have banned and others have dealt with by requiring in-school daggers to be firmly soldered into their scabbards.
