My grandmother's name was Floetta. I've been trying to find the origin of this name for some time. I've been told by a family member that it is an Indian name and I was thinking maybe French. I don't know. I can tell you that the family background is German. She was born in 1897. Her mother was 20 at the time and unmarried. Some of my thoughts were the name came out of a novel from that era.

If you could help that would be great. Family members nicknamed her Floy.

Florence was shortened to Floy when it was megapopular, as a break from all the Flo and Florrie people. My guess would be that it was a blend of Florence and something like Henrietta; it sounds prettier than Floy to me! It also sounds Western i.e. not Native American (if you meant that kind of Indian), but I can't prove it.

Floetta looks like a form of Floretta (try the link). This name is used many European countries.
