what do you think of the name maria spelt marea? the pronounciation's different too. the ea at the end of the name is pronounced the same way as the ea at the end of my name (andrea). it's kinda like in the middle of maria and mariah.

So he's telling you that in Europe the name is principally associated with a perfectly respectable Fiat mid-size sedan, not with a female personal name.
If you're in the US where Fiats haven't been sold since the passage of the Anti-Corrosion Act of 1981, no one's ever heard of the car. In either case, it's a benign, pleasant-sounding word with no bad connotations I'm aware of. I'd have no hesitation using it as a name if I were you or yours.
