'Tis Latin for "lyre"A lyre being a musical instrument. And here's what the handy-dandy dictionary has to say about "lyre"'s etymology:Middle English lire, from Old French, from Latin lyra, from Greek lura.

So they're naming her after a musical instrument.I'm half tempted to tell them....but then they'd decide to NOT use it, and they'd be back at the drawing board.I think I'll keep my mouth shut. Siri

They could do worse. On Babycenter recently there was a couple seriously considering naming their daughter Amanda Lynn. Which, as some respondents pointed out, is also a kitchen slicing tool ...

It's also a musical instrumentOnly in that case it's spelled "mandolin". I got introduced to the instrument as a young kid in the hospital by a Golden Book retelling of "Rapunzel", wherein Rapunzel played the mandolin while getting her hair brushed by her foster-mother (better known as the witch).Pictures of mandolins: http://snipurl.com/df8t.

yes, the name Lyra does originate from lyre but there is also a constellation of stars called Lyra so perhaps you could tell them that instead!

Lyra is also the main character in the His Dark Materials trilogy, by Philip Pullman.
