meaning of name
I am a female. When my great great aunt was pregnant with my great aunt, some Indians were passing by and their wagon broke down. My great great aunt and her family helped them. They then asked my great great aunt if she had a girl would she name her Wastella and they did. I was named after my great aunt. I'm not sure but the Indians may have been Cherokee. I can't seem to find the meaning anywhere.
My Mother seemed to think it may mean either Little or Big Star!!

Where did your gg-aunt live when this happened? Cherokees during that time period lived mainly in eastern Oklahoma (not by choice, but that's another tragic story) with smaller numbers in western North Carolina and North Georgia.
Oh course you're not sure if they were Cherokees, so the place makes a lot of difference. Doesn't mean we'll figure it out for sure, but it'll help.

I know less than nothing about Cherokees, and of course coincidences do happen, but I'm sceptical. Stella in English means Star (like in constellation), and it's a marvellous meaning, but if it existed in Cherokee before they met people speaking English (or Latin) then I am surprised. Not that it matters - names can come from anywhere - but it will be interesting to know.
