I don't know if there is an English variant of Onofre. For the etymology, I have read that the name is derived from the Greek
onofrios - one who feeds donkeys, as ridiculous as that sounds o_0. Google seems to think that
onov is, indeed, Greek for
donkey, but the Greek speakers might be able to confirm that.
