"Stirling" (Scotish? Celtic? Pictish?) read on....

Having checked this site and it listed as variant of Sterling. This name definately relates to the place name in Scotland, which is older than Middle English. This concerns a name "Sterling Bruce"
So what is the meaning of the place name?
