Skyler is the most fabulous name in the world becuase not only does it serve as a unique name for both boys and girls, but it is rich in culture and meaning. originally the name schuyler was a dutch name, and that was adapted into skyler, or skylar by the english. eventually the name was virtually forgotten and then brought back to life in the deep south. the name skyler means learned one, it also means sheltering. it is so unique and fresh, perfect for any age, the nick name sky can be used, which again is absoultely precious. so before going for the traditional "mary" think about SKYLER.

I really like the name Skyler, I also like Skylar and Skylor to a lessor degree. It's much better than Tyler and a fantastic alternative

It's a Dutch representation of the umlaut in German Schüler, not "learned one", but "scholar", not a Dutch word, but an adaptation of a German name. As a surname it probably referred to an academic or teacher, as the only "schools" were originally the universities. In modern German though it refers to someone attending a school for younger pupils (i.e. elementary, middle or high school). There seems no basis for interpreting it as "sheltering". for one, the grammar is wrong, for another, it makes no sense as a surname as it originally was. Dutch schuil "shelter, hiding" appears related to skulk and skulker. Someone possibly may have earned the nickname "skulker", but the term "schuiler" does not occur in Dutch (there is "schuilener", but that seems rare and the sense something like "stalker, hounder").

I personally love it! It indeed is rich in meaning as well as beauty. I also like the way it almost sounds like skylark. As an aspiring science fiction writer I like to use names in a way that plays on their meaning. Skylar would be a great name for a scholar/scientist, and then the phonetic association to Skylab wouldn't be such a bad thing!

Well, whatever floats your personal boat. In Dutch as far as I know it means more like Lurker or Skulker, which fail to appeal.
It also looks like an ill-advised merger between Mylar and Skylab. Perhaps the bird who names her daughters as if they were sons might be interested?
