I'm wondering if the name "Cosette" might be related to "cosset", meaning lamb or more generally, pet.

p.s.As for acting names, "Lucius" (from the latin for "light") was a famous Roman tragedian. Also "Harlequin" and "Columbine" are traditional pantomime characters.... and then there are all the names created by Shakespeare for his plays. (Search for "play" or "Shakespeare" under description on the home page)

According to our Venerable Leader Mike C (the Compassionate, the Merciful) Cosette is of unknow origin.
Some name sites however suggest that Cosette (as well as Colette) are nicknames for Nicole.

Well, Colette is an obvious fore-clipped version of Nicolette. And Nicolette is a diminutive of Nicole. But as to Cosette, I have no clue. Could it be a feminine version of Nicos (Nicos -> Nicosette -> Cosette)? Nicos is Greek for Nicolas.

I think your theory hold water, 'lassia :)
I suspect that the "s" comes from the French version "Nicholas" (the Greek female version of Nikos is Nike).

I think we might be quite right here, Paavali! :-)
