As Daividh says, the name "Mariah" probably is derived from "Maria".
As to whether or not this name (or the name "Maria") has any connection to the Mariah of the Alan Jay Lerner lyrics you mentioned, from the Broadway and movie musical *Paint Your Wagon*, I dunno.
One thing's for certain though, Mariah the Wind sure had a catchier sounding name than Tess the Rain or Jo the Fire.

When i was little, my grandpa sng this to me. and up until he died we would sing it together:( he recently died in may 2004. He was that kind old man that you couldnt help but hug him. He lied about his age to serve his country. real family man. I have alot of memories in that song. Thank you for having this site.
