Moriah/Mariah
I am trying to find the origin/meaning/connection of these two names. I have learned that Moriah might be from the Bible meaning "bitterness of the Lord". But, I've seen church signs saying "Mt. Moriah" which doesn't make much sense if that meaning is correct.
I've also learned that Mariah could be a derivitive of Maria. Is this the same name as we hear in the song verse "and they call the Wind Mariah"?
Thank all and whoever for any help here.

I am a native Hebrew speaker here whose special interest is the ancient Levant region
the etymology is uncertain but it's the name of a flower that has a similar shape to the menorah and is mentioned in the Tanach (there is a common misconception that it's the same as the Old Testament) it's also a place name mentioned in genesis where Abraham tries to sacrifice his son "the mount of Moriah" (no one genuinely knows where is it located because it could mean anything)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moriah
I wasn't able to find the English name of the flower but I did find this Hebrew article that has pictures of the flower I was talking about
(I don't know how to put pictures in my replies)

But as to the meaning according 'behind the name' it means "seen by Y-hweh" but regardless modern Hebrew sources interpret the name differently and according to them it may derive from 'mori' "מורי" and yah "יה" meaning "Y-hweh is my teacher"
But as to Mariah, it might be a spelling variant of Maria

Hi, I would love to unravel this mystery. I am a Mexican, it's in my nature to find truth in things. I have found in my lifetime many things. For example, Mexican deriving from Meshika, Meshika meaning Mesiah in Arabic. Also that YHVH means Maryah in Arabic. This because in the book of true life also known as the third testament given to my people 200 years ago by the Holy Spirit. It is written that Mariah and Christ are manifestations of the same Divine Spirit. One God expressed into a human male flesh and the same God.expressed into a female flesh. Same flesh mother son and same Spirit. Born out of Spirit into one flesh. This would mean that the mount was called Mariah, meaning the Lord's name is also Mariah, Christ Jehova. All the same Divine Spirit. It might be a lot to take in, but if you study it out and ask God for revelation you will end with understanding of the matter. Amen for more info text me at 208-291-8779
Hi, I "bumped into" your site doing some research on "Moriah". First of all, "Moriah", the name of the mountain (in the Bible) where Abraham offers up his son Isaac, means "God provides". Mori + yah ("yah" =God. Thus, the reasons some churches are called "Mt Moriah Church" is obvious....
It is likely that the female name Mariah is a combination of "Mary" + "God"..... = "God's Mary" or "Mary of God". The name Jeremiah, for example is Jeremy + yah... "Jeremy of God". There are SO MANY Biblical names that end in "iah"..
As to why the westerners "call the wind Moriah" .....? Why 'Tess' and 'Joe' for the rain and fire? Perhaps the wind demands as it takes away things when blowing tempestuously at times, and thus, though Mt. Moriah symbolizes God provides, it also symbolized "God demands" as he did to Abraham. Though Abraham's son was spared at the last moment, Job's sons (and daughters) were not..

But what do they call the smog way out West?
As Daividh says, the name "Mariah" probably is derived from "Maria".
As to whether or not this name (or the name "Maria") has any connection to the Mariah of the Alan Jay Lerner lyrics you mentioned, from the Broadway and movie musical *Paint Your Wagon*, I dunno.
One thing's for certain though, Mariah the Wind sure had a catchier sounding name than Tess the Rain or Jo the Fire.

The difference is that Mariah is a PERSONAL name (not Biblical)probably derived from Maria, whereas Moriah is a PLACE name, not a personal one.
The "land of Moriah" is where Abraham was commanded to take Isaac for sacrifice, and "Mount Moriah" is the very height upon which Solomon built his temple in Jerusalem (temporarily occupied by another tenant, but I editorialize).
So it would appear the words are unconnected as names and there's really no basis for confusion.
