It depends on the gender and the ethnicity. I am an African American male, whose father is directly from Uganda. I have always understood that my name means "one born overseas" or "foreign born" in the Lango language (since I was born in the States, to my dad I was a foreign born child).
In Gaelic (Irish Gaelic, I think), I believe the word "Anam" means "soul." If you've ever heard the phrase "Anam Cara", it means "soul friend." I don't know if it is used as a name, but I'd bet it probably is since words in English often become names, like Joy, Hope, April, River, Sky and on and on.
In Arabic, I believe Anam is a female name that means "present" or "reward." I don't know whether it can also be male in Arabic.
Hope that helps!
Cheers,
Anam
