Gamel / Gamelus
I have an ancestor whose first name is recorded as
"Gamelus (Gamel) ...."
born in England, 1020 AD.
This appears Arabic. Could it be French or Latin? What would it mean?

The name Gamelios (M) was one of Zeus's many names, and Gamelia (F) -- with an accent on the last syllable -- was one of Hera's. Both names mean "of or for a wedding" and are derived from "gamos", meaning wedding.
Gamel is a fairly common Norse given name, brought over to England by the Nordic invaders in the early middle ages (400-1000AD), which gives rise to the surname Gamble in the UK. I think the details are in Withycombe's ODECN. I can't remember the exact meaning - I'll look it up and post tomorrow. It is unlikely bordering on impossible that this name is any form of the Greek Gamelios/Gamelia.
I am a little curious as to how anyone is a ble to trace their family back so far...

I believe the Norse given name of "Gamel" means "old". Is so?
