I'm sorry to sound dumb but I love this name, both for boys and girls. I wouldn't give it to my child as a first name, but as a middle name it's nice. If I ever have a daughter and I can persuade my future husband to allow it, I really want to name her Elanor Scout after two of my favourite books. My sort-of boyfriend (it's complicated) hates Scout though and keeps insisting I'm mad for liking it.

I think it'd work on either gender ... I suppose those who are anti "stealing" might object to its use on a boy - I don't mind unisex usage myself, though. I do prefer it on a girl, a la "To Kill a Mockingbird".

I wouldn't use it, but it's defintitely one of my guilty pleasures for girls. To Kill a Mockingbird is my favorite book of all time, so just hearing the name makes me smile. Her real name was Jean Louise, but I'd much rather be called Scout.

I like it for a little girl but I just can't imagine calling a grown woman Scout.

I used to really like it (and it still holds a soft spot in heart), but I would never ever use it. On a boy it seems weak, and on a girl it seems too cutesy. I love To Kill A Mockingbird, but hey it wasn't even Scouts real name - just a nn folks for all you who want to use it for that reason. Therefore, I will tolerate as a girl's nn, but I'm going to use it as a name for one of my cats (I want two cats Hunter & Scout, with a dog named Chase!!).

It's a cute nickname for a willful kid, but I definitely don't think it makes a decent personal name .. first or middle. I agree with as that it sounds like a dog's or cat's name, and moreover, it's sort of comical or trivial sounding, someone being called Scout. A "scout" seems like a low rank to me; scouting is work for children. Girl Scout, Boy Scout. I'd feel like I was making fun of an adult when I addressed him as Scout.

Yep, I definitely prefer it as a boys name, but I'm not that fond of it anyway.

I like it as a middle name on either gender.

I think of "To Kill a Mockingbird", and the little girl called Scout in the movie, she was cute so I automatically liked it, but only as a nn:)

I see what you mean and I do kind of like it for a boy. I've always thought it was masculine. I know all about "To Kill a Mockingbird" and I'm sorry, I still don't think that any parent should name their little girl Scout!!! Including Demi and Bruce. It's just...icky. It sounds like a dog's name as well.
