Re: Mary

I'm sorry to say I strongly dislike Mary. It is probably the most overused female name in the English-speaking world - ever - so although it isn't popular on babies right now, we all know such an infinite number of Mary's of all other ages that it sounds generic, as unoriginal a choice as someone could possibly make. I read an interesting article about when it is appropriate for dated names to come back without sounding "wrong" to our ears. The conclusion was that once there are no people left with the name (very crude, I know - but once the last generation of Ivy's / Ruby's / Alfred's has passed away) and young parents no longer know any and therefore no longer assocatiate it with the older generation, the name reclaims an old-style charm. I'd give Mary 70 years. For now, imho, a no-no. Sorry :-(
