well, i am a mary, 22yrs old. i think is old fashioned but i think it has staying power, i dont want to sound conceided but the name mary goes back to biblical times and maybe even farther. i read on some name meanings site, it might have been this one dont remember, and it said that the name couls have evn been used in ancient egyptian times due to a word or two that sounds roughly like mary i forget exactly what the word(s) was but anyway. i think a name that can last that long, just lok at other names from the bible that are still in great use today, joshua, matthew, luke, ect...oh and a kinda funny thing, i am in a bowling league and the other week i counted how many ppl their were also named mary.. their are 8 marys ranging in age from 22 to 70 something

Mary Rita is my grandmother's name and I also have a 20 some yr old cousin named Mary Catherine. I think it can be used on all ages.

I'm sorry to say I strongly dislike Mary. It is probably the most overused female name in the English-speaking world - ever - so although it isn't popular on babies right now, we all know such an infinite number of Mary's of all other ages that it sounds generic, as unoriginal a choice as someone could possibly make. I read an interesting article about when it is appropriate for dated names to come back without sounding "wrong" to our ears. The conclusion was that once there are no people left with the name (very crude, I know - but once the last generation of Ivy's / Ruby's / Alfred's has passed away) and young parents no longer know any and therefore no longer assocatiate it with the older generation, the name reclaims an old-style charm. I'd give Mary 70 years. For now, imho, a no-no. Sorry :-(

My niece is named Marybut like her mother (also named Mary) she goes by her middle name, Miranda, nn Mira. Now, I think Mary would have been much prettier, though Mira fits her better.Siri

No, it's not too old fashioned, although it is somewhat old fashioned sounding & looking. I was friends with a Mary in high school, and I know a Mary who's a lawyer with 2 kids... so I have no problem picturing it on people of any age. It seems very conservative in a way, and yes, it's very simple and classic .. but not too much so. It's a classic because it's beautiful. I like it. - chazda

I love Mary. I would use it as a middle name because I have ones I like better, but I would love seeing it more on little kids. I don't think it's outdated at all.

I love it! I can see a female of all ages with the name Mary--from infancy to old age.The name is a classic, but isn't very common right now at all. She'll likely be the only Mary in her class. I think it's old-fashioned, but in the wonderfully timeless way Elizabeth or Sarah is. It sounds sweet, simple, and solid. And very refreshing in todays sea of Mikaylas and Kaylees.Miranda

I've been thinking of this name quite a bit, lately. I hated it before (because I thought it was boring and too plain), but now I think it's really pretty and kinda cool! I can see both a little girl and a teenager named Mary =).

It's a little plain, but it's certainly not overused right now (I've only ever met one Mary in my generation). Nothing I would use, but overall a pretty name that could work well for any age. I would use it with a less well-known mn, though, because of the plainness factor.

I never used to like it because I thought it was too "dated" but it's growning on me because it's my lovely grandmother's name. I would only use Mary or any of it's variations as a middle name. I'm 20 years old and I think it's a little strange when I meet a teenaged girl with this name. But I think the name Mary would be precious on a little girl. So to answer your question... Yes I do like it.

I think the name is plain, but thats not necessarily bad. It's definetly not too old-fashioned to use now. I can picture a teenager named Mary, but not a little girl. I think Mary would best be paired with a vibrant middle name or Mary being used as a double name.
ie not Mary Elizabeth but rather...
Mary Bronwen
Mary Vivienne
Mary Calista
Mary Florenceor as a double name:
Mary Louise _middlename_
Mary Mackenzie (my favourite growing up)_middlename_
Mary Claire _middlename_
Mary Kate _middlename_but thats all just my opinion.
