One of my son's friends is named Hugo, I really like it, it's a bit different without being too different, and not stuffy like Hugh.
Only drawback to Hugo is the Spanish pronunciation is "Oo-go". Probably not an issue unless you live in the Southwest, but I know that's been an issue with my son's friend, Hugo. He's get's called "oo-go" by his teachers and classmates that are native Spanish speakers. He think's it's funny, but it drives his mother crazy. I don't think his parents expected Hugo to be a name that was difficult to pronounce properly in English.
