Hugo
Better or worse than Hugh? I like Hugo for the author (Victor), and I think it just looks and sounds better than Hugh.
Hugh is also somewhat out because it is too rhyme-y with the surname, but Hugo isn't as noticable. (The LN is four syllables and the -yoo sound is at the end.)
I got so many wonderful suggestions in my last thread, but this one is standing out at the moment.

One of my son's friends is named Hugo, I really like it, it's a bit different without being too different, and not stuffy like Hugh.
Only drawback to Hugo is the Spanish pronunciation is "Oo-go". Probably not an issue unless you live in the Southwest, but I know that's been an issue with my son's friend, Hugo. He's get's called "oo-go" by his teachers and classmates that are native Spanish speakers. He think's it's funny, but it drives his mother crazy. I don't think his parents expected Hugo to be a name that was difficult to pronounce properly in English.

It's a nice enough name. Hugo is the popular one here, and I have nothing against it. If it's less rhymey, go with it.
I have never liked Hugo, it just looks unwieldy somehow and there was a character in a book that I never quite got over. I don't really like the hard g sound either.
I'm not too keen on Hugh, because it seems stuffy, but I like the Welsh spelling Huw. It just seems friendlier, stupid as that may sound!

I thought of the actor before the author, frankly. I haven't read Array's comment, but I wonder if she's mentioned Mr. Weaving as well. There is also the men's designer label Hugo Boss, which is très chic.
I really like Hugo much better than Hugh, Mr. Jackman's gorgeousness notwithstanding. Hugo sounds more fun, Hugh sounds stuffy. But that's just me.

I'd say no
Mainly because I do know what your last name is/will be, and I think they still rhyme a bit.
It's okay as a name, I just have negative associations with it.

i dislike the name
I think Hugo is more striking than Hugh and I like the Victor Hugo association. Hugo makes me think of Hugo Boss and Hugh of Hugh Grant. Hugo is a common name amongst Afrikaans speaking people in South Africa although with a very different pronunciation (He-ghoo). Generally I don't like Hugh or Hugo and would never use them. As far as H-names go I prefer Hadrian and Homer.

Personally I very much prefer Hugh. Hugh is a name that I absolutely love. Whereas Hugo I just dislike for no real reason. It brings to mind an ugly hunchbacked villain, along with Igor, haha.
I am a little hesitant about the sound of Hugh when saying it repeatedly, but generally I like the sound. I LOVE the meaning of Hugh / Hugo though : )
That said, Hugh does very much rhyme with your future surname, which is sad.

I really, really abhor both, sorry. They sound like huge, and are so ugly to me.
I slightly prefer Hugh, though.

Yeah, that wink says it all
I suspected you would refer to Mr. Weaving. ;D

Nah, it's actually only about twenty or so, since all the names have to immediately make me think of VFV. Maybe I'll post it when I get home. :)

They wree infamous for their laughable quality and also in our area for one having plunged off the Mackinac Bridge. :-P
I almost bought one in high school off eBay for five hundred bucks. Would've been the best five hundred bucks I'd ever spent if my mom wouldn't've stopped me. *grumble*
