Royal vs. Noble
I got into an interesting discussion with my boyfriend. I am really digging the name Ezra Noble. I love Noble, and I think it's quirky but usable. My boyfriend doesn't, his reasoning being that if our son turned out to be a drug-dealing criminal it would not fit him. (Don't even ask me about that)I remarked that I had an uncle named Royal, and if that could be used, so could Noble. Well, he loves Royal and prefers it to Noble.I think Royal is stupid, especially as it's not a virtue. It's like Destiny and Fate to me. Noble is a virtue, a good one at that, and a lovely name. So: Which do you guys prefer?

I'm with you...Anyone can be noble if they choose; royalty is a fluke of the birth pool. (And Ezra Noble rocks!)

I don't care for either name, but I prefer Royal. However, Ezra Noble sounds better than Ezra Royal.

Ezra Noble sounds so funky! I really like this combo. I love the name Ezra - I think it is so under used. I would be disinclined to use Noble as a first name, but it's great as a middle name. Noble & Royal make me think of Donald Trump's son's name Barron. I perceive Noble, Royal & Barron as daring names.

I plan on using Noble as its my mothers Maiden name, aside from that its very handsome! Royal is not as nice.

There's a police chief in Wisconsin named Noble Wray. I always thought that Noble sounded really handsome, mostly because I think of a real-life person. Ezra Noble is especially great. I hate to sound gushy, but it's poetic; I love word names, and how can one separate Ezra from Pound?Royal is fine as a middle name, IMO, mostly because I think of Almanzo Wilder's elder brother. :) But I do definitely prefer Noble to Royal.Array

Your son will not become a drug-dealing criminal!
Noble is good. Royal is silly. If one *is* royal, no need to be named that, and if one is not, there's no point.

LOLI agree that my son will not turn out to be a drug-dealing criminal. :-D THanks!

I don't care for Royal. It makes me think of people who names their kids Princess and Sir Something. :-/ But Noble sounds more like a name to me. Probably partly because of the late actor Noble Willingham. So I'm with you on this one. :b

I definitely agree with everything Cora said about the problems with Royal. I think Noble is a great mn, and it is probably the only virtue name I like on a boy. Besides, Ezra Noble is fabulous.
I don't see the appeal of Royal at all. It seems tacky to me, fitting in with all the Treasures and Princesses and Princes out there. Besides that I don't see the appeal of royalty in general let alone as a name.

I don't care for Royal, but Noble is fine. You can make a similar argument about Royal. If your son ended up poor, Royal wouldn't fit him either plus if he ever behaved difficultly, people could mock him and call him "Your Royal Highness". Besides, Ezra Noble has a much better flow than Ezra Royal does. If he won't settle for Noble, how about Loyal? It would make a decent middle name and it's much better than Royal if you ask me.Edited to add something.

If he turns out to be not a monarch, Royal won't fit him either. Of the two, Noble sounds a lot better.

While both names are nms, I like Noble much better. I think it's great as a mn, but I would never use it as a first name. The combo Ezra Noble is awesome!Like you, I think Royal is stupid. It sounds like it's trying to be a virtue but failing miserably. Did that make sense? So Noble gets my vote.

I prefer Noble. Besides the fact that it is infinitely less tacky to name your child after an admirable quality than a preordained financial station, I just think Ezra Noble sounds better. ;)Putting your obvious example of the drug dealer aside (o.O), can one ever say exactly what characteristics a name's bearer will have? We've all known bratty Graces and Destinys whose destinies were less than the stuff dreams are made of, but it's not like their names affected that. The best parents can do is hope that their kids grow up well to possess positive characteristics, and I think naming your child after something or someone who exemplifies these traits is a positive reflection of that, even if I occasionally succumb to jokes about Heaven-leigh and what will become of her.
