Forgotten friends
One reason I love old-fashioned names is the thought of renewal. Like an old house being restored, I love to see names from the past being rediscovered. With that in mind, what do you think of the following names and can you see them coming back into popularity (or at least not laughed at when you suggest them to others):
Agatha
Ailsa
Bess
Blanche
Cora
Cornelia (nn Nell?)
Glynis
Edith
Edwina
Elsa
Enid
Eugenia
Frederica / Fredricka
Hester
Imelda
Jean
Joan
Muriel
Myra
Olympia
Regina
Renata
Sibyl
Ursula
Wilhelmina ("willa + mina")
Winifred
Heck. If Hazel and Tallulah can catch on, I figure some of these on my list have a chance. Does anyone else?

Agatha - Maybe but the similarity in sound to agony and hag is off putting.
Ailsa - I could see this coming back.
Bess - Definitely in the UK, I've seen a few birth annoucements for little Bessies and I know a baby Betsy.
Blanche - Still old ladyish for many people I think.
Cora - I can definitely see this coming back.
Cornelia (nn Nell?) - The corn part isn't very attractive, and I think many will think it sounds long and snobby.
Glynis - Possibly.
Edith - Already getting fairly popular amongst the Daily Telegraph circuit.
Edwina - I'm afraid I can't drum up any enthusiasm for this. I went to school with an Edwina and I don't remember her ever being teased about it but I did always wonder why her parents gave her such a hideous name.
Elsa - I think this and Elsie will come back soon.
Enid - I'd love to see this come back but most people seem to think it's ugly. :(
Eugenia - I think it's got a posh/snobby association in the UK because of Princess Eugenie, so probably not.
Frederica / Fredricka - I don't think so, but Frederick is starting to come back so I could be wrong.
Hester - I think Esther is much more likely.
Imelda - Maybe.
Jean - I think this is seen as very plain still.
Joan - Ditto.
Muriel - Still old lady tainted I think.
Myra - Definitely not in the UK because of Myra Hindley. It won't ever come back here. I think it's got a good chance in the US though because it sounds similar to Mia/Maia.

Agatha - I don't think this one is quite ready, but with the nn Aggie & the popularity of Abby, Addie, etc, well, maybe it could happen sooner.
Ailsa - I can see this catching on. I like how it sounds.
Bess - Maybe. I think of a cow.
Blanche - I don't know. It doesn't have a nice sound imo, and I don't really care for the association with the color white. It just seems very blah.
Cora - I definitely think this one is ready. I don't care for it, but I can see it becoming popular.
Cornelia (nn Nell?) - Maybe. It's cute.
Glynis - Don't think so.
Edith - Possibly. I really like this one.
Edwina - Not yet. But I do kind of like it.
Elsa - Definitely. I love this one.
Enid - I don't think so. For some reason, I think of a bug.
Eugenia - It could happen. It's cute and would age well.
Frederica / Fredricka - I don't think so.
Hester - I doubt it. I don't care for it. It makes me think of "fester".
Imelda - I love this, but I don't see it catching on anytime soon.
Jean - I can see this making a comeback.
Joan - It's possible. I really like it.
Muriel - I prefer Mariel, but I like this one. I can't see it making a comeback yet. I think it's still very "old-ladyish" to most people, though. =\
Myra - Definitely. I'm surprised it hasn't made a comeback already.
Olympia - Maybe. I could kind of see this one catching on.
Regina - I just don't think so. Especially with the re-JIEN-a prn.

Agatha- It's very nice, and the nn Aggie is awfully cute...but I don't think it'll be making any sort of comeback soon.
Ailsa- Never heard of it, but sounds Scottish or something of the sort, and if it is, people'll rediscover it.
Bess- Very cute as a nn for Elizabeth.
Blanche- The sound isn't very nice imo. And it reminds me of the word blanch. Like somebody turning pale.
Cora- Sounds like big comeback material. And a pretty name.
Cornelia- I'm planning on calling my first daughter Nili, and I want her to have an English name too just for the fun of it. I love the name Cornelia, and Nili could probably be a nn for it, so I think I might have a Cornelia if no one else does.
Glynis- I don't like it much.
Edith- Pretty, pretty, I like!
Edwina- Also nice.
Elsa- Will definitely make a comeback - it's classy, and it's sort and sweet.
Enid- Reminds me of arachnids and Enid Blyton.
Eugenia- Very classy. Could come back.
Frederica / Fredricka- I love Frederica, but Frederick will probably have to come back first (I don't think it's very popular now)
Hester- I'm reading a book with a Hester in it! Very nice name. I prefer Ester though (es-TER).
Imelda- Pretty name! Very pretty. I'm adding it to my list.
Jean- I love it!
Joan- Nice.
Muriel- Too old-lady and not very pretty...

The ones I like that I can picture coming back strong before too long:
Bess
Cora
Nell - and Nellie too! But not Cornelia, I'm afraid
Elsa
Hester
Jean
Joan
Muriel
Myra
Renata
Sibyl
I have friends who've mentioned interest in naming a real child Willa or Winnie, but not Wilhelmina or Winifred.
I know Hazel was used by Julia Roberts, which in theory will give it a bump, but I just don't like it, never have. I associate it with witch hazel, of which I have no good childhood memories. Tallulah I really like, and always have, but I don't know if it's going to catch on with the public at large. Maybe; but I have been laughed at for suggesting it, just a few months ago.
I have tremendous doubt that the other names will come back any time in the next fifty years. But then again, what do I know? Tough to predict. Who could have predicted Trinity or Nevaeh? Maybe Agatha and Edith will make the hot list with my kids.

I strongly dislike all the names with the exception of Wilhelmina. I love the nn Willow for that name. I'm not too sure I see many of the coming back with the exception of Jean perhaps. My two year old cousin's middle name is Jeane, after her grandmother.
Depends on what you mean by catch on. I love a lot of these, and if they got so popular as to become unusable, I'd be sad (think Emma), but I would like to see a resurgence as you describe -- not every third babe named it, but people won't laugh at it, either.
Agatha - Pretty sound, and nn Aggie is so cute to me.
Ailsa - Not sure how this is prn, but the "ail" part of the spelling is slightly off-putting.
Bess - Cute, but only as a NN
Blanche - Reminds of 1. A Streecar Named Desire, 2. the saucy Golden Girl, so while I think it's an OK name, it has no appeal to me
Cora - You know how I feel about this one :D
Cornelia (nn Nell?) - Pretty enough, but I prefer Penelope nn Nell and Cordelia to Cornelia. The Corn- thing.
Glynis - I knew a Glynis for a time. I think it's charming.
Edith - Love this, especially with nn Edie
Edwina - Pretty, but nms. I could appreciate it for someone else, but I worry about nicknames. In our boys-names-on-girls obsessed culture, I think she'd become Eddie, and that would be sad. Edie or Winny would be nice with it, though.
Elsa - Love this! I think it's classic and refined sounding and a wonderful alternative to the tired (thought traditional) Elizabeth
Enid - Nice, but nms
Eugenia - Adorable. It's one of those names that I think is absolutely darling for a child but still sophisticated enough for an adult.

Agatha - I love
Ailsa - I'm not sure how to pronounce this.
Bess - This is the nickname I'd like to use, but every single person mooed at me. I was forced to use Bess.
Cora - Sweet, lovely.
Elsa - I truly love this, along with Ilsa. I know a few Elsas, so it is on its way back
Jean - I love its simplicity
Renata - I like this quite a bit, but it's a bit too fancy fo rme.
Oh yeah, I like Ursula
For some reason, I've always liked the name Ursula. A lot of people think its ugly, but I think it has a really pretty sound even though I don't like 'U's' that much. I can sort of see it coming back. :)

Agatha- I can see this catching on. I adore the nn Aggie so I can imagine other people liking it, especially since I see it in a similar way to Maddie or Addy.
Ailsa- I don't see this taking off in Australia due to the fact that this was the name of the old biddy in the soap Home and Away for years. That will be a memory in too many people's minds. I can't imagine it on anyone but an old lady. Not ready for a revival.
Bess- Love this and I think it is definitely ready for a revival. It makes a great nn for Elisabeth
Blanche - I personally don't like this because to me you "blanche the vegetables". To me, I don't want to see it revived.
Cora- I like this name a lot. If my boyfriend Ben gets his way, one day it will be a definite possibility for one of our daughters because he adores it. I think there is a definite possibility of a comeback but I believe it will need to be helped along by a TV character with the name.
Cornelia - I despise this name, and I can imagine a lot of other people with the same opinion. It is an ugly sound. I don't think the name will be helped in Australia by the fact that the Weakest Link host here was Cornelia Frances (who is also an actor), who is always a cold and heartless character in everything.
Glynis- I still know elderly people with this name, so it doesn't sound as fresh as some of the others do to me. I don't think it is quite ready for a comeback.
Edith- I love the nn Edie, and Edith is okay but I can imagined being laughed if I ever suggested it. I know that in Australia,

Agatha: I want to like it, I love Agatha Christie, but I can't quite hook on it.
Ailsa: I'm never quite clear as to pronunciation.
Bess: Oh, yes, please!
Blanche: I prefer Bianca, but this could work on the right child.
Cora: Oh, definitely!
Cornelia (nn Nell?): I prefer Cordelia, just for Shakespeare's sake.
Glynis: This is gorgeous...I'd love to see it come back.
Edith: I'm starting to see people at least consider it, so I think we'll see this soon.
Edwina: Can't get on board with this.
Elsa: Lovely.
Enid: I want to like it, but I don't.
Eugenia: Mmmm...maybe.
Frederica / Fredricka: No, but I could totally do with Frederick showing up more for boys.
Hester: No, but I'll take Esther.
Imelda: Still pretty shoe-loaded for me, but it might work for the next media generation.
Jean: Still pretty 45-year-old to me.
Joan: Ditto.
Muriel: Lovely.
Myra: It's very pretty.
Olympia: Nah...but not because of age, just that whole "Greek god" kinda thing.
Regina: Can't decide.
Renata: For some inexplicable reason, this is conjuring up air fresheners in my mind.
Sibyl: I'd love to see this make a comeback.
Ursula: I read this great book last year called "Ursula Under" and it sold me on this name.
Wilhelmina ("willa + mina"): With the nn of Mina? Definitely!
Winifred: Blame Angel, but I like the idea of a girl called Fred.
Ailsa: I'm never quite clear as to pronunciation.
Bess: Oh, yes, please!
Blanche: I prefer Bianca, but this could work on the right child.

Elsa is one of my favorites. In general, I'm not a fan or resurrecting the geriatric names before their time though. The cycles turn naturally. There's no need to rush it.
Yes there is a need to rush it. I'm old and I want to be around to enjoy it.
:-D
:-D
Dare I hope to see my all-time favorite ugly duckling, Ursula, become more popular? One can dream . . . .
Thanks for your post!
Thanks for your post!
I can see these becoming popular again:
Bess
Blanche
Cora
Cornelia (nn Nell?)
Glynis
Frederica / Fredricka
Jean

Myra
Regina
Renata -- love this one
My own list:
Ada
Adela, Adelina
Barbara -- even though I greatly dislike it
Cora, Corinna, Corinne -- just ripe for the taking, imo
Frances, Francine, Francesca -- I think Francesca could be the next Isabella or Sophia/Sofia.
Georgia
Joanna
Ruby
Sweet nns: Molly, Sally, Nancy, Betsy, Nellie
Bess
Blanche
Cora
Cornelia (nn Nell?)
Glynis
Frederica / Fredricka
Jean
Joan
Muriel

I adore your list.
Ada -- I love short names where the vowel sounds outnumber the consonants.
Adela / Adelina -- I've long waited for Adele to catch on. These are equally fetching.
Barbara -- I didn't love this name until I saw Wendy Hiller in "Major Barbara." Rent it and hopefully you'll see what I mean.
Cora / Corinna / Corinne -- I agree. These have great potential for 2007.
Frances / Francine / Francesca -- I agree about Francesca, although I long for Francisca to get her due too.
Georgia -- Hasn't this one already caught on? Once I saw a character on Ally McBeal named Georgia I assumed it had. I also heard it in a romantic comedy as a potential name for a child.
Joanna -- Johanna is a family name for me, so I'd love to see Joanna come back.
Ruby -- I grew up watching Masterpiece Theater. Have you seen Upstairs / Downstairs and the character of Ruby? She's the scullery maid and I fell in love with the name just from watching her.
Molly -- Molly was very popular in the 80's / 90's, wasn't it?
Sally -- The world needs more Sallys.
Nancy -- My mother (Anna)'s nn.
Betsy -- I know a Betsy in her 40's. So cute.
Nellie -- I had a great-Aunt Nellie. So sweet.
Thanks for taking time to respond to my thread. :-)

I like every single one of those names. On the one hand, I've got pretty far-seeing tastes, but on the other hand, I do think they'll all be revived. Everyone's going to catch up to me eventually, and there'll be little Jeans and Winnies running around again. ;)
One you've left off--I rather wish everyone didn't hate Edna so much, because how can anyone possibly reject a name that comes with an image like this?
It's so romantic looking, even if she went by Vincent. :D

That portrait is AMAZING. I've seen it before, but it never ceases to please. I agree the name Edna should be better received. Even Eithne hasn't really caught on the way I thought it would.
If I had to guess, I'd say it's the "Ed-" part that puts modern ears off. With renewed interest in Edmund / Edmond, hopefully the "Ed-" embargo will soon be lifted.
I hope I'm around when everyone catches up with your taste. Jeans, Winnies, Elvys, Evenings and Scholasticas are much awaited. :-D

Ailsa- Cute, might come back
Bess- I love it, but I don't know about the comeback

Edwina- No
Elsa- Maybe
Enid- Yes
Eugenia- Yes
Frederica / Fredricka- Probably
Hester- Nope
Imelda- Yes, probably
Jean- Yes
Joan- Yeah, I see it quite a bit on these boards even
Muriel- I prefer Mariel, but who knows
Myra- I don't like it at all, but it just may shock us all and return
Olympia- I love it and hope that people will use it more
Regina- I don't like it, but I don't even think it really left
Renata- I adore it and know many people who do, so I think so
Sibyl- Probably
Ursula- Certainly

Thanks! My jaw dropped when I came to "Ursula -- Certainly" I thought I was alone.
I'm so glad there are may people who love Renata. I've been puzzled by lack of enthusiasm when I suggest on this board and at Babycenter.com. It seems more mainstream than old-fashioned, but it never gets much of a response so that's why it's on the list. You've made me feel better about it, and others on the list. Thanks.

Cora - I know a baby with this name. I think the name is really cute.
Cornelia - The name, in my opinion, fits in with other names such as Amelia, Ophelia, Octavia, etc. all of which are gaining popularity (or at least some sort of recognition).
Edith - I'm not sure about Edith, but I can see Edie becoming popular.
Elsa - Yes! My best friend is named Elsa! I think its adorable.
Myra - Definitely. It has a fresher sound.

Edith - I'm not sure about Edith, but I can see Edie becoming popular.
Elsa - Yes! My best friend is named Elsa! I think its adorable.
Myra - Definitely. It has a fresher sound.
