I like Stella much better than Ella. Another name that you might be able to use Ella as a nn for could be Elizabeth (although I like Elie better for that one)

I don't have any negative associations with this name. I think it's very pretty.
A friend of mine is going to name her first baby, if it is a girl, Stella Ruth (see my post above). I think Stella is a fabulous name, and a good option for Ella. Though I don't think Ella is overly popular yet.
Edited: I just checked the popularity rankings. I had no idea Ella was already that popular!! It just must not be used too often where I am; I've only heard it a few times. Huh.

I was so surprised it was that popular, as well! In fact, I've never actually met an Ella in real life.
I think Stella is just beautiful and has a more elegant feel than Ella. Ella though cute is very popular right now and not quite as pretty as Stella so in my opinion you'd be better off with Stella.
But Ella is cute and sweet so if you end up naming your daughter Ella it's not going to be a tragedy because it's not quite as wildly popular as Hannah, Madison, Ashley, Kaitlyn, ect.
