I prefer them with nicknames. You'll have a hard time with Samuel if you don't want him to be nn'ed. Sam's more ubiquitous than any of the others, IMO.

For Thomas, I prefer Tom, Tam, Tommy, and Thom (I pronunce the H). For Charlotte, I like Tatty and Lotte best.
