The first thing I think of is the fact that this is a town in New Mexico.
Also sounds too much like clove.

I'm not big on Clovis; -is endings aren't usually my preference. I do love the possible feminine version Clovia, though. I think it's a sweet and unusual name.

I think of cloven-hooved, which leads me to think of the devil. :o( Either that, or I think of Clover. I much prefer Ludwig.
