I prefer Ellie, only because Elle is french for she which is... not great (as other people have pointed out).

I like it, it's pretty. Whenever I hear this name it always makes me think of two women, Elle MacPherson and Elle Woods (From the movie Legally Blonde). I like these combos:Elle Rebecca
Elle Jemima
Elle Rhiannon
Elle Brianna
Elle Matilda
Elle Felicity
Elle Gwendolyn
Elle Guinevere
Elle Sabrina
Elle Natasha
Elle Victoria
Elle Magdalena
Elle Samantha

I could never use it because "elle" is the English equivalent of "she" in French. We picked French names last year, and one girl unknowningly picked the name Elle. She's going to change it next year because she gets so confused in class. She doesn't know if the teacher is talking to her or reading something from our assignment!

I have the same issue with Ella in Spanish

I've always disliked it. It seems like it's missing something; very nickname-y, but I don't like it as a nn, either. Also just seems like a fluffy, ditzy sort of name. :-/

Too many years of French lessons to see this as a person's name. I realize Ella has the same problem in Spanish, but that extra syllable makes all the difference to me. That and the fact that I don't speak Spanish. ;-)
