In my opinion it's not always a good idea, because people use their initials to identify themselves a lot. If a letter arrives for A. Surname, which teen is it for? How do you decide who opens it, and what do you do when the wrong teenager opens another's private mail? And when they've all left home and scattered to three different cities, and letters arrive for A. Surname, how do you know where to send them on to, without opening them and invading your childrens' privacy?
I know two families who have had this problem, one with two daughters whose names start with T, and one with two sons who both have the initials A.S.
So in my opinion, life is complicated enough without adding avoidable hassles, and this is a hassle that is avoidable!
