I think of the Sloan family....
...Of Daria. Kay and Angiers, and their children, Tom and Elsie. I also think of the Sloanes of the Anne books and of the character in Ferris Bueller's Day Off.I find it unflattering and unattractive on a girl. On a boy, he could almost get away with it, but on a girl? There's not a single feminine nickname to made of it, and that makes me uncomfortable in the extreme. There's not really any nickname to be made from it, so if she's stuck as Sloan. If you'd like to honour your friend, I'd suggest Sloan as a middle name. You could still call her by it on occasion--I call my sister almost exclusively by her middle name, though no one else does--and if she didn't feel like a Sloan (I sure wouldn't), then she wouldn't have to be Sloan to everyone. Plus, it would still honour your friend--I believe in honouring, and so that's important. :)ArrayETA: See also: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=sloane
