In a way, by itself, it sounds like a really old name mainly because of similarity to Mattie and Maggie. I prefer it to those, maybe; it's a little softer and more contemporary. I also prefer it to Addie; it seems steadier.
The only Maddie I have known personally had the full name Maddalena, and it seemed alright as a NN for that. She was born in the 1990s, and, I think, named after her grandmother. Before I met her, I associated Maddie with Madison, which seems kind of shallow/preppy in a generic way. I also know a Madeline (born in the 1980s); she doesn't use a NN, and I think that suits her.
