Looking for more unusual names
I have a thing for weird names. I would never burden a child with those names, but I still like to make lists of them so here it is!
Maybe I'll use them for a character one day, or a pet? Not sure, but if anyone has any that fit the criteria, I'd love to hear them! What I've got so far is:
Xerxes Romulus (Zee)
Ethel Peridot (Etta)
Somerled Gregor (Merle)
Phyllis Myrtle (Lies)
Ptolemy Bear (Olly)The criteria is: First name is something odd/a guilty pleasure name. Second can be anything as long as it matches the vibe of the first name. Nickname (I love nicknames) is short or old-fashioned. Some of these names I ACTUALLY like, like I think Ethel Peridot is beautiful, but have been advised against it for a few reasons. So it goes on the list! What's everyone else thinking? The worse the better!Side note: pronunciations are ZURK-seez ROM-yoo-luhs, SUM-er-led, and TOHL-uh-mee (for Xerxes Romulus, Somerled, and Ptolemy)EDIT: By cruel, I just meant that I've had people call me cruel for considering these for children. I'm aware that cultural context makes a huge difference, so I've changed the title to 'unusual names' :)

I don't know if it goes with your name vibe but before I have had people look at me like I spoke in alien language when I say I like the name Zaynap. It's pronounced zie-nahp as far as I know, like Zainab with p (it's a form of Zainab).Zaynap on submitted names

What constitutes a "cruel name" is so culturally specific :') The names listed are just vintage English or foreign (to the US I'm assuming?). Personally, I wouldn't blink twice at any of those. I agree that "cruel names" are ones that strip a child of their dignity. Others that come to mind is a boy named "Sanitizer" and twins, "Covid & Corona," during the pandemic. Aside from that, names that strike me as "inconsiderate" are common names with "unique" spellings, like "Toughkneigh" pronounced "Tony." Less extreme examples would be anything that replaces a "ck" with an "x" or an "ie/y" with "eigh" for absolutely no reason other being convoluted.Unusual names I like, but wouldn't use (for a child):Floris Anatole (more or less translates to "flowering sunrise/prosperous dawn")
Ehrengard Godelieve ("honorable beloved/guarded love")
Caelestis Merce ("heavenly mercies")
Salvatrix Wiltrud ("saving will")
Winter Rein (sounds like "winter rain" with the meaning of "sobre counsel")
Balendin Asier ("new strength/powerful beginning")

Thanks so much! I love those names!
I totally agree with what you said and I didn't mean to offend anyone with my wording. These are just the names that I've had people call me cruel for considering. The amount of Ethel hate I've heard is bizarre!
Oh, no offense caused :) it was really a comment on my own thought process of what would be a "cruel" name. A name that is very unusual and difficult to pronounce where a person actually lives could definitely be inconsiderate, even if it's a classic name elsewhere. I agree, Ethel hate is bizarre to me, but it's based on people's own associations. I'm naming babies and I don't even tell anyone my choices, because people criticise based on *their* experiences, not mine. I'm at a point where having a name I love called "cruel" just gives manipulation. It's so subjective and the only opinion that really matters is mine [serene emoji]
I don't consider those to be cruel. Naming your child Gaylord or Satan or Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii is cruel, and I wish I had made that last up... Bit, I love odd names too, here are some of my favs in combo form for the occasion:Cebrián Mordechai
Svarog Maximón
Sargon Agamemnon
Herla ValerianSalacia Godiva
Ravenna Morana
Svana Sunniva
Zelda Quirine
These are great! Cebrián has actually been on my mind a bit, can't believe I didn't think of it!I've edited the post and title to 'unusual' instead of 'cruel'. I didn't mean as me thinking these are cruel names, more that I've had people call me cruel for the consideration of these names :)
