I'm going to be charitable and assume that Papa means something in another language besides "Daddy" (it also means potato in Spanish) but it calls to mind the old joke about the kid who asked the neighbor what they were going to call the new baby. "We'll name him after his father." "WWho'd name a baby Daddy?"Before you criticize a man, walk a mile in his shoes. That way, when you criticize him, you're a mile away and you have his shoes!

It seems like it's most popular in Ghana and Senegal. It can apparently mean "good" or "father" and maybe other things in Twi (mostly used in Ghana) depending on what tone you say it in, and in Senegal, it's also actually a thing to call kids by their grandparents' nickname even if it's something like Vieux "old man" or Oupa "grandpa" so possibly related to that.
