I create the Male Names of the Gilded Age Tournament in the Polls; once again, suspicious poll results are happening
I'm sorry, but c'mon. I'm tired of this. "Theron" beat Sterling in the second round, which I found odd; I literally made a note to keep an eye on Theron in the next round to see if there were suspicious voting totals- well, it might be coincidence, but Theron v. Abraham in Round 3 (and the poll posted just before it) have the highest vote totals of all the polls so far. And again, wouldn't you know it, "Theron" beat Abraham by a single vote. Listen, there's nothing wrong with the name Theron, but Abraham is a millennia old Biblical name that is currently ranked #218 for boys in the U.S. this year. Maybe "Theron" really just is a huge underdog, I'm just tired of this happening repeatedly. The exit polls don't reflect the poll results. I've been doing this long enough to see patterns, and I don't understand why someone would vote repeatedly to push their favorite names to the front. It's unfair to others, it's weird, and it defeats the purpose of what I'm doing.
If you are the person manipulating vote totals in the polls and you are reading this, I sincerely ask that you stop. Give the VPN a rest. Please.
Edit: I have asked user Dianatiger to please stop posting unusually antagonistic responses, but they will not. I don't know how else to deescalate this but to stop responding.
Me: I think someone might be up to something fishy with my polls, and if so, please cut it out, it's unfair
Them: YOU'RE INSANE
It's a weird response.
Edit 2 (9/2/24): I returned again to discuss that my suspicions have again been proven by this round's exit polls, and user Dianatiger appeared IMMEDIATELY to accuse me of being under the influence to even suggest this. I'm sober. I'm also not just suspicious of user Dianatiger, I think her behavior in this thread would qualify as bullying and harassment and I would like to please ask for their account(s) to be suspended.
Edit 3: Please remove user Dianatiger's account. She has broken the first three rules over and over and been incredibly cruel, but saying this-
"Gonna be honest: you being in recovery explains a LOT. Get some more help, because you need it." Where are the mods??? We're talking about NAMES, here, and this person is mocking my sobriety. PLEASE remove that account, and any duplicates they may have. That's disgusting to say to another human being, full stop.

I wish you weren't leaving BTN.
You’re talking this way too seriously. This isn’t meant for scientific research. They’re just for fun and opinions and these are namenerds taking the polls, not the general public as a whole, so I would expect higher votes for more unique and interesting names than common, old names in this particular setting. You’re causing too much drama over something that is really not serious at all.
Theron beat Sterling in the second round, Sterling received 17 votes in the exit poll. Theron beat Abraham in the third round, Abraham received 10 votes in the exit poll. Theron was finally eliminated in round 4- it received just 6 votes in the exit poll. Theron had 23 votes just to defeat Abraham, the highest vote total of the tournament so far. Just look at the exit polls, and look at the extreme outliers. There's too many for it to make sense; that's not what the exit polls should look like. There shouldn't be names being eliminated in the 4th round of voting that are receiving 3 or 4 votes in the exit polls. It just doesn't add up and becomes more glaringly obvious with every round.
I'm stopping the poll.
I'm stopping the poll.
I don't think you're insane. I have a suspicion that most of the people who use polls are pretty young and are just goofing off. And the anonymous nature of polls allows people to be unserious with them. It's a perfect storm for producing wonky results. They probably *are* messing around with the results, but it's just because they are being dumb kids and they see the polls as a game or a toy and it's fun for them to see how their vote changes things. It's annoying and I understand why you'd be bothered by it. I don't know why some people are taking your annoyance so personally.
I'm not surprised that Theron is more popular than Abraham, if my hunch that most poll respondents are bored teenagers is right. They don't care about the history of Abraham - Theron is a "cooler" name.

I am never able to vote more than once. I voted for Theron.

I don’t think anyone is cheating. Some polls just get more votes than others. I sometimes skip over polls where the names don’t interest me. Also, popularity in real life isn’t the same as this site. I know a lot of names are mentioned on this site that a lot of people seem to love that I’ve never seen in the US Top 1,000. It can also depend on who is responding to your polls. I know you mentioned how Abraham is a millennia old Biblical name, but for someone who likes more modern names, they might not like Abraham. I think Theron is just a surprisingly popular name. Also, I can't picture anyone caring about skewing poll results enough(your's on anyone else's) to create multiple accounts.
I don't find it hard to believe that people like Theron slightly more than Abraham. I also don't find it terribly odd that some polls get more responses than others and have noticed it with my polls. I think some people skip over polls where they don't like or feeling strongly about any of the names.
It's not hard to believe that someone would be cheating in the polls to boost their favorites, I've seen people go farther for less. And people do weird things when they're bored. Although it's probably not just your polls in that case but others as well.
Thank you, I appreciate the validation, haha
I never accuse you of being insane? 🤨 I only said you were being unreasonable. I don't even think you're insane. But I do think you're experiencing a bit of "main character syndrome." To the mods for the record: this user's original post and their original replies to me were highly antagonistic in nature and I only responded to them with this in mind. They have since edited it to make themselves look more like a victim 🤷♀️
Dude, just drop it. She wasn't even talking to you.
FYI, you've edited two posts in response to Cheryl while she only did it once to you, so that argument doesn't really work.

She accused me of calling her insane within the edited post so, yeah, I'm going to respond 🤨 that edited reply she made to me was an attack on me. That's why it was so lengthy and continue to be so after the edit.
To humor your theory I voted on that poll once and logged off of my account to see if I could vote again as a guest. Even after I logged out it wouldn't let me vote a second time. I used a different device to try again and it still didn't work that time either. This would mean that the only people that could theoretically do it are people that use multiple accounts. But again, who would waste the time to log in and out of multiple accounts just for your specific polls?

Mike closed that loophole, but you can vote multiple times still by simply turning a VPN on and off; it comes standard with most computer security software.
And that's even on carefully crafted scientific studies, let alone a random internet poll
I still find it incredibly hard to believe that people would care that much to vote multiple times. If there's anything I learned from my scientific Studies classes that anomalies sometimes just happen. People are inconsistent in scientific studies literally all the time. You might give wildly different answers on a survey at 7:00 a.m. versus 7:00 p.m. for instance. The same person can vote differently on something they did previously on any given day for any number of factors.
Mmmmmmmmmkay, thank you for your many, many responses. I don't know if this is gaslighting or you just being patronizing, but it's not all in my head, thank you.
I'm not being patronizing. I'm just telling you- people don't usually care that much.
You clearly do, but again, message received, thanks for the input. Your opinions have been duly noted. Please stop messaging me repeatedly.
Why do all your comments have 4 upvotes? Are you logging into multiple accounts and upvoting your comments? I just find it odd so many people would upvote your rude responses to Diana's very neutral ones
If you think her very pointed and dismissive tone in all her many, many, many comments was normal, fine I guess? But if you're accusing me of something, back it up. I would say making thinly-veiled accusations against a specific person also qualifies as a hostile response, like Diana's completely passive-aggressive ones. Neither of you are masking your true feelings of genuine anger well, and I find that strange, to say the least, especially in response to such an innocuous post.
The reason I care is because you wrote it incredibly rude and passive agressive message to everyone accusing people of being narcissistic cheaters 🤣
You seem to have taken extreme personal offense to a plea for fairness. Odd.
That, and saying that people are taking the time and effort to cheat on your specific polls kind of feels like "main character syndrome" energy.
Seek help. I've asked you repeatedly to stop messaging me. Stop.
Because you keep replying to me!
I do when the person is being incredibly rude about it LOL
You've been rude since your first comment. Please stop and just leave. I've asked multiple times for you to go.
You know what? You're totally right actually. I'm so sorry. People are definitely taking the time and effort and energy that is required of logging off and on of different accounts in vpns to interact with your polls. They're just the bestest best polls in the whole wide world. They're so well thought out, planned, and aesthetic that people want to be able to engage with it more than once. That is definitely what is going on.
See that one was being patronizing. There's a difference. Good night hun, and I hope you have a good day or night Wherever You Are in the world. I hope many blessings come your way and only good things for you tomorrow.

You have an extreme amount of pent-up aggression, "hun." This was extremely weird, rude, uncalled for behavior on a civil post venting my frustrations. You've minimized that, you've been patronizing, passive-aggressive, and defensive. I don't think my polls are important at all, but they're important to me. I don't care if that's dumb to you. Go take your misplaced anger out on somebody else.
Like I said before, I hope you have a good day or night Wherever You Are in the world. I hope many blessings come your way and only good things for you tomorrow. Rest easy. If you truly believe with your heart that people are taking the time and energy to cheat than I'm sorry. Be my guest.
I was incredibly polite at first until you started progressively getting Ruder. And the only reason I replied with the patronizing message was to make a point that I wasn't being so in the first place. Again, I'm sorry if you consider that rude. If you have that hard of a time with people simply trying to draw a light onto the situation then idk what to tell you.
Who would waste their time doing that? I think you're putting too much thought into this. If you that strongly favor some of your particular choices over the others: what even is that your objective of the polls if you've already made up your mind? 🤷♀️ if you only want people to vote if they're going to have the same opinions as you, then get huffy when people don't agree, prerhaps you shouldn't utilize it? Idk..
I do not care about the names in question, I'm concerned about the anomalous results when I want accurate ones. There's consistent inconsistencies. I shouldn't be able to *predict* dark horse wins.
I don’t know what’s going on but I personally prefer Theron over Abraham.
The issue isn't the names, it's the consistently anomalous results. I'm just asking that if someone IS voting multiple times, that they stop. I don't want the opinion of a single person shoved to the front, I'm asking the users of this site a question as a group. Someone forcing their opinions to the front is gross and unfair to everyone else. If *everyone* likes Theron, great. I'm simply asking that people only vote once. Getting accurate results in these polls is important to me; as the person who takes the time every day to put these tournament polls together, I don't think that's a lot to ask. People voting multiple times makes the results meaningless, and therefore the time and effort it takes to make the polls pointless.
Treat this as a PSA. My polls might look like a competition, but they're a survey. I'm sorry if somebody's favorites don't make the cut; my favorites tend to get cut early on as well. I just want to make it clear that I, personally, ask that people only vote once in my polls, and the reasons why. It's a bit narcissistic and unfair to vote repeatedly, imo.

I don’t think anyone can vote multiple times unless they use a different username perhaps or change their VPN location, but I can’t imagine why someone would see the fun in that. Whenever I’m logged out I can’t vote on the polls that I have voted on while being logged in.
You don't even have to change your VPN location, you just have to turn it off and on again and you'll have a new random IP address, allowing you to vote again. Literally, it's the click of a button in order to cheat, and the cheating hasn't stopped, it's very visibly worse now the further we get into the tournament. Look at the exit polls. All those names underperforming are names I've had written down and marked as suspicious, lol.
The polls aren't a reliable source for "true" scientific study use. That, and I just find it hard to believe that people would care that much about your specific polls over anyone else's. No offense. But again, if you feel that sensitive by that possibility that someone is "cheating", going through an elaborate effort to write a passive aggressive PSA, then you might not be in a good headspace for using the polls for that time period.
You've been incredibly rude in all of your responses, please leave.
I haven't been rude at all. What? 😆 I'm just telling you that's probably what's going on because you wrote an incredible passive aggressive PSA. If that constitutes rudeness in your mind, my apologies.
