Next year's school leavers
In a small South African country town, next year's school leaders (prefects) have been announced. Judging by their names, most come from Afrikaans-speaking families. Any ideas? I'll include a few notes at the end which might help a bit.Boys:
Albertus; Julian; Sinobomi; Christable; Jurgens; Siyolise; Gideon; Maree; Tobie; Heinrich; Nils; Timo; Johan; Rohann; Werner
Girls:
Bea; Jana; Leané; Chiara; Janice; Marzaan; Heike; Kaitlyn; Mia; Herley; Kayla; Miencke; Isabel; Lea; MietteThe best meanings I could find for Sinobomi and Siyolise are, respectively, We have life (or, We have a life) and Make us happy.Christable is definitely a boy. Jurgens and Maree are lnfns. Tobie isn't Toby because in Afrikaans the -y sounds like -ay as in day or way. Rohann is probably a merger between Robertus and Johannes, or Robert and Johann. Leané has three syllables: lee AH nay. Marzaan is probably a merger between Maria and Suzanne, which is often spelt Suzaan (su ZAHN); the stress would be on the second syllable. No clue about Herley! Miencke is probably a Dutch diminutive of Hermien, itself a fem form of Hermann. I would guess that Miette sounds like me ET rather than me ET uh, but I can't prove it.Heinrich, Werner and Heike are triplets!
